If you are about to head off on a well deserved vacation, you are doubtless packing up all of the things that you will need on your trip. For wearers of braces or other orthodontic appliances, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. While you are filling up your suitcase with clothes, books, suntan lotion, and all of the other essentials, remember to bring those other items that are crucial to protecting your appliance and dental health. Additionally, ensure that you are prepared in the event that something were to negatively impact your orthodontia while you are away.
Items to Bring
Some stores have available braces and tooth care kits that you can purchase for your trip. However, it is just as easy and certainly less expensive to designate a case yourself for these items. Make sure to include:
- Floss, toothpicks, and interdental cleaners
- A small water bottle to rinse out your mouth whenever needed
- A compact mirror that you can use to examine your mouth for current or potential issues
- Orthodontic wax in case your braces become uncomfortable on your trip
Items to Avoid
As you probably are aware, there are some food items that should be avoided when you are wearing braces. While on vacation, it can be tempting to throw all these rules out the window but remember that doing so could result in damaged aligners and extended treatment. Steer clear of:
- Whole fruits such as apples and pears
- Hard breads and bagels
- Pretzels and cookies
- Hard candies and nuts
- Corn still on the cob
- Any foods that are overly chewy or sticky, i.e. gummy snacks, gum, taffy etc.
Make sure to do some research prior to embarking on your trip. Just a quick online search should yield a couple of orthodontists in the area to which you can go if an emergency were to arise.
In the event that you lose a tray to one of your clear aligners while you are on your vacation, make sure that you bring along an additional tray. Simply slip in the other tray and give us a call when you return.
Keep these little suggestions in mind and have a great trip!
